When acquiring eBooks from a public library, it's common to encounter the ACSM format, rather than the more prevalent EPUB or PDF formats.
What exactly is an ACSM file? As depicted in the image below, an .acsm file serves as a download link and not an actual eBook.
In my opinion, the best way to open .acsm files and read them on common reader devices and software is by converting them to the common EPUB or PDF formats.
In this article, I will be addressing the process of converting ACSM to PDF in just 3 steps.
To convert .acsm to PDF, you just need three simple steps:
- Install Adobe Digital Editions
- Authorize ADE with your Adobe ID
- Drag .acsm file into Adobe Digital Editions
Please note that the PDF generated from .acsm is DRM protected, if you want to convert the format, back up the file, or want to read it freely, you need to remove the DRM. This article also covers this part.
Step 1. Install Adobe Digital Editions
ACSM is designed by Adobe which helps you manage, read or transfer your ebooks to another e-reader. Furthermore, only Adobe Digital Editions can open acsm file.So firstly please download and install it.
Adobe Digital Editions for Windows download: ADE for Win (8.24MB)
Adobe Digital Editions for Mac download: ADE for Mac (22MB)
If you have already installed you can skip to the next step.
Step 2. Authorize Adobe ID
If this is the first time using ADE, you will see a dialogue box. Then you need to input your Adobe ID to authorize the current computer. Of course you can also create an Adobe account to register if you don't have an Adobe ID yet.
Then enter your Adobe ID and password, click the Authorize button to activate it.
Adobe ID to ByteBooks ID
Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) officially ended Adobe ID support on June 23, 2026. Users must now authorize ADE using a free ByteBooks account instead of an Adobe ID when setting up new devices or encountering re-authorization prompts. Here I highly recommend you use the same email address and password that you used for Adobe ID to create and migrate your ByteBooks account.
Step3. Open .acsm File and Download acsm as pdf Books
Now find the .acsm files you downloaded in the computer, then double click them, they will be opened by Adobe Digital Editions as default. If they can not be opened normally, you can click the right mouse, select Open with—Adobe Digital Editions.
As soon as the downloading part is completed, you would see all your PDF books. Choose one book in the main window, click the right button and select "Item Info" , a new dialog box will pop up. It shows the location of the downloaded ebooks.
- For Windows: ...\ My Documents (Documents)\ My Digital Editions ...
- For Mac Users: \Your computer name\ Digital Editions ...
That's all. Now you've successfully transformed your acsm files into PDF format with Adobe Digital Editions. Congratulations!
You can read your converted PDF books on Adobe supported devices, such as Kobo Aura, Sony eReader, etc. Just copy them with the USB cable. But there is an important thing you should keep in mind that it would be better to make your eReaders be authorized with the same Adobe account (the same e-mail address).
Convert Adobe-only PDF to regular PDF no DRM (Remove drm from ACSM PDF)
In addition, I have to tell you a truth that you can't read these converted pdf books on Apple devices (iPad mini Retina, iPod, iPhone) and Kindle devices (Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Fire HDX) because these PDF books are protected by Adobe DRM. Is it possible to convert ACSM files to PDF format online?
There are some acsm converters such as AnyConv which claims that they can help convert adobe digital editions books to pdf online. But here I would say that since acsm files are bundled with your adobe id, you are not allowed to convert acsm to pdf online without the authorization from adobe digital editions unless you telling the third-party website your adobe account information. That's not safe. So the online ACSM to PDF converter is not recommended here.
In contrast, I highly recommend you convert the downloaded ACSM files onto ACSM Mate tool with Epubor ACSM Mate so that you can back up your library books in epub and pdf format instead of ACSM links.
Can I convert acsm to pdf without Adobe Digital Editions?
The official method for converting ACSM to PDF is by using Adobe Digital Editions. If you want to bypass this limitation and convert an ACSM file to PDF without Adobe, you can try using the Calibre DeACSM plugin. However, this method is more complicated. Firstly, you need to install Calibre. Secondly, you need to create an Adobe ID (bytebooks account). Thirdly, you need to install the DeACSM plugin. Lastly, you need to customize the plugin to be compatible with your ACSM file.
However, the DeACSM plugin will only help you convert ACSM to drm protected ePub or PDF(depends on the download option you select when exporting the acsm file).
To convert acsm to common ePub or PDF, you should also install the DeDRM plugin to Calibre.
DeACSM replaces ADE's job of fetching the book, DeDRM handles stripping the encryption, and you need both together (plus, per user reports, exporting the .der key from DeACSM into DeDRM's Adobe Digital Editions settings — a step people frequently miss). It's free but fiddly, and support forum threads show recurring issues (plugin load errors, Calibre version mismatches, "no supported resource format" errors).
Epubor ACSM Mate trades that setup complexity for a paid, single-purpose app — no plugin pairing, no key exporting, just sign in and drop in the ACSM file.

Can't believe I'm supposed to download some Adobe app to get a book I paid for. If I'd known this I would not have supported Google Play and I never will again. Every time I install an Adobe product I have to fight tooth and nail to keep their fucking bloatware off my machine. Obnoxious, invasive bullshit. Can hardly believe a software giant like Adobe is so intent to grasp at every penny that they would engage in an embarrassing practice like that. Any have you ever read their TOS?
