If you need to remove drm from Kindle books, please install Kindle for PC 2.8.0 & the latest Kindle for Mac to download your kindle books.
First things first,
please make sure you are using the latest version of Epubor Ultimate.
Note: To prevent installation errors, kindly uninstall the older version of Epubor Ultimate, and then install the latest version.
Why downgrade Kindle for PC/Mac to an older version?
Amazon recently released a new version of Kindle for PC/Mac, which has a more robust Digital Rights Management (DRM) scheme than any previous version. Kindle books downloaded through the latest kindle for PC or Mac are now encrypted with the new Kindle KFX DRM. We are currently working on a new solution. In the meantime, you may need to revert to an older version of kindle for PC temporarily.
If you’ve already installed the latest Kindle app for PC or Mac, don’t worry. In this post, I’ll show you how to downgrade your Kindle app to an older version.
Method 1. Downgrade Kindle for PC 2026
Manually downgrade kindle for PC
Step 1 Go to the top menu bar, select “Tools”-->> “Options”.
Step 2 The option window will pop up. Select “Registration” at the left side and click on “Deregister”.
Step 3 In the popped-up window, tick “ I understand….be removed from this device” and then click on “Deregister”.
Step 4 Download older version of Kindle for PC.
Now the latest verson of kindle for PC is 2.8.2(70987).
If you need an older version for kindle app for removing kindle drm, you can choose one of the following older version of kindle app: Kindle for PC 2.8.0, Kindle4PC 2.7.0, Kindle for PC 2.4.0.
If you want to crack the latest kindle books, you should install kindle for PC 2.8.0 and use Epubor Ultimate to remove drm.
If you want to use Kindle for PC 2.4.0, you may not download the latest purchased kindle book, but Kindle for PC 2.4.0 is compatible with Calibre DeDRM plugin 10.0.9.
Step 5 Install older version of Kindle for PC.
Then uncheck the Kindle automatically update option by clicking on "Tools">>"Options">>"General">> uncheck “Automatically install updates when they are available without asking me."
If the "Software Update Available" notification pops up, please click on "Skip this version" button. Then re-download the kindle books again via old kindle for PC.
You can still follow the steps above to revert to an older version of Kindle for PC if needed.
Important update:
Kindle for PC 2.4.0 can no longer download ebooks to a PC without being updated. Therefore, if you need to download Kindle books purchased in 2025, Kindle for PC may no longer be the ideal option.
You don't need to downgrade kindle for PC to remove kindle drm in 2025. Epubor Ultimate latest version supports kindle for for PC 2.8.0.
Pro tip: How to remove drm from kindle for PC ?
After successfully installing the old version of Kindle App for PC, you now can remove drm from kindle books.
To decrypt Kindle books, run Epubor Ultimate first and download kindle books. Then drag the Kindle books from the left bar to the right main interface. All Kindle books will be decrypted successfully.
To convert Kindle books, choose the output format from the central-bottom button and click on "Convert to XXX".
Once finished, "Succeeded" will appear at the end of each book title. Click on "Succeeded" or on the "Output folder" at the bottom right to locate the converted files.
Since you have liberated your Kindle books, enjoy them on any device as you like.
Method 2. Downgrade Kindle for Mac 2026
Downgrade Kindle For Mac to version 1.40 manually
Failed to remove drm from kindle books on Mac? Please follow the guide to downgrade the kindle for Mac manually. The steps of downgrading the Kindle for Mac is the same as on Windows.
Step 1. Go to "Applications", right-click on "Kindle", and select "Move to Trash".
Step 2. Download and install "Kindle for Mac 1.40".
Step 3. Launch "Kindle for Mac 1.40", click on "Kindle" from the top menu bar, select "Preferences", then click on "Update". Uncheck the "Automatically install updates" checkbox.
Important update: You don't need to downgrade kindle for Mac to remove kindle drm in 2025. Epubor Ultimate latest version support kindle for Mac 7.38.1.
Pro tips for removing drm on Mac>>
Launch Kindle for Mac, right-click on the book title, and select 'Download' to download your Kindle books.
Launch Epubor Ultimate, and drag the downloaded books from the left panel to the right panel. The DRM will be automatically removed.

I'm running the latest version of Epubor Ultimate, and version 1.24.3 of the Kindle app, but none of the new released books on Kindle Unlimited will download into this old version of the Kindle app anymore. They all give the error "Your Kindle app requires an update to view this content. Click here to download and install the free update."
This is on every single new Kindle release that I've tried. Only older releases work. Either something is wrong on my end (shouldn't be, I updated your Epubor app from the update option in the app and then had it downgrade the Kindle app).

Kindle Unlimited is a rental service, so you don't actually own the books. Therefore, Epubor software can't convert Kindle Unlimited books for you.

Two solution: 1. use epubor ultimate 2 revert to calibre 4.0 and then install the dedrm plugin again.
This doesn't work. When you try to install the old 1.23 Kindle version on macOS Catalina, you get this error message:
"The developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of macOS. Contact the developer for more information."
There is no way to bypass this.

It used to work for me and I have used Calibre and Epubor for a while now but all of a sudden it doesn't work anymore.
I have the right version for Kindle (1.24.3 (51068))on my computer (Windows 10) but I get a message saying that the book I want to be converted is protected by DRM.
I tried to do it directly from Calibre but no joy there either.
Any idea?

We were aware of this issue. It seems amazon kindle has changed something in the newly published Kindle books. It requires the latest Kindle app to download it. For the books published before 2023, it still can be downloaded with the old kindle app and can be decrypted with Epubor Ultimate.
