Kindle Jailbreak for Firmware Version 5.16.2.1.1 or Lower

Posted by on .

This jailbreak method originates from a vulnerability in the Kindle system related to system calls, disclosed by a user named GeorgeYellow on the MobileRead forum. This vulnerability is triggered after selecting Simplified Chinese during system initialization, allowing access to system privileges. Another user, Marek, built upon this to create a specific implementation of the jailbreak. As this jailbreak is achieved by switching languages, it is named LanguageBreak. The steps provided in this article are derived from this implementation.

Warning! The jailbreak method described in this article may damage your Kindle system, including but not limited to making the device unusable, violating Amazon's warranty terms, and any other potential malfunctions. Epubor is not responsible for any issues caused to Kindle devices by following these instructions. If you encounter problems during the jailbreak process, it is recommended to visit the MobileRead original post to see if there are related discussions.

Please read every step carefully when reading this article for the first time. Do not skip any steps or prompts to avoid mistakes.

1. Prerequisites

As this vulnerability has been patched in firmware version 5.16.3, your Kindle firmware version must be 5.16.2.1.1 or lower.

2. Preparation

During the jailbreak process, all user data may be deleted. Therefore, before starting, please be sure to back up important files in the Kindle's root directory, such as the entire documents folder which contains eBooks, reading progress, annotations, and notes.

Another important point: if your Kindle device has previously connected to the internet, the latest firmware file may have already been downloaded and is waiting to be automatically installed the next time the Kindle restarts. Therefore, to prevent automatic firmware updates, please ensure you delete any firmware files with the extension .bin or any partially downloaded firmware files named update.bin.tmp.partial from the Kindle's root directory.

Additionally, please ensure your Kindle does not have a password set. If it does, remove it first. If you have forgotten the password, you can reset the Kindle by entering 111222777 in the password input box (note that this will delete all user data on the Kindle device).

3. Downloading Software

The files required for the jailbreak can be obtained via the following links (it is recommended to download the latest version from the project's release page).

GitHub Release Download

You will download a compressed file named LanguageBreak.tar.gz. After extracting it, you will get a folder structure as shown below, containing all the files needed for the steps in this article. Any files that need to be copied in subsequent steps can be found within this folder.

4. Jailbreak Steps

The jailbreak process consists of three parts: first entering Demonstration Mode, then performing the jailbreak within Demonstration Mode, and finally installing the hotfix patch.

1. Entering Demonstration Mode

1Go to the Kindle interface and enter ;enter_demo in the search bar at the top, then press Enter.

2Restart the Kindle by clicking Restart in the Kindle menu to enter Demonstration Mode.

3Skip the Wi-Fi setup. In the "Register Demonstration Device" form, enter any characters and click Continue.

4On the "Getting optional demonstration types" screen, click Skip, then click Standard.

5You will then enter the "Demonstration Mode: Add Content" screen. Click Done directly to let the device complete automatic configuration.

6During automatic configuration, the screen may go white for a period. After completion, you will enter the screensaver interface. Tap to enter the Configure Device screen.

7Use the secret gesture to skip this screen and enter the Library interface. Refer to the following description for how to perform the secret gesture.

  • Tap the bottom right corner of the screen with two fingers briefly, then immediately slide one finger horizontally from right to left.
  • Press and hold the bottom right corner of the screen with two fingers simultaneously, then lift the right finger, followed by sliding the left finger horizontally to the left for a certain distance.
  • Press and hold the bottom right corner of the screen with two fingers simultaneously, then slide directly to the left.

Note: In subsequent operations, whenever you encounter a screen with the text "This demonstration device is either missing content or is disconnected from the network" or "CONFIGURE DEVICE", you also need to use the secret gesture described here to skip it in order to continue.

If a "Collecting Debug Info" prompt box appears during the above steps, it indicates you are retrying the jailbreak steps incorrectly. Please refer to the method provided in the FAQ section to reset your Kindle and then start over.

5. Performing the Language Jailbreak

1 Tap the search bar at the top of the Kindle interface, enter ;demo, and press Enter to enter the "Demo Menu" interface.

2 Click the Import Content button, then connect the Kindle to your computer using a USB cable.

3 Copy the following folders and files from the LanguageBreak folder to the root directory of the Kindle:

+-- documents
+-- DONT_CHECK_BATTERY
+-- jb
+-- patchedUks.sqsh

4 Eject and disconnect the USB device. Click the Done button to re-enter the "Demo Menu" interface.

5 Select the "Resell Device" option  >> Yes/  Sell buttons in sequence. Wait a moment for the "Kindle Button Diagram" to appear.

6 As soon as the "Kindle Button Diagram" appears on the screen, immediately connect the Kindle to your computer using a USB cable.

7 Copy the four items from the LanguageBreak folder to the root directory again, overwriting existing files.

8 Eject and disconnect the USB device. Press the Kindle button as shown in the diagram on the Kindle to restart the device.

9 Under normal circumstances, a language selection screen will appear after the restart. Click Chinese (????)  >> Next in sequence.

10 The Kindle screen should display jailbreak-related log information. Proceed to the next step after the restart.

6. Finalization Steps

The device used for testing was a Kindle Paperwhite 4 with firmware version 5.16.2.1.1. After the previous step completed, the Kindle automatically restarted and entered normal mode. However, some users have reported that their Kindle devices still entered Demonstration Mode after restarting. Therefore, this section is divided into two scenarios. Please choose the one that matches your actual situation.

If your Kindle restarts into Demonstration Mode:
  • Enter ;uzb in the search bar at the top of the Kindle interface and press Enter to activate USB transfer mode in Demonstration Mode.
  • Connect the Kindle to your computer using a USB cable. Copy the hotfix patch file corresponding to your current Kindle interface language, update_hotfix_languagebreak-xx-XX.bin (e.g., en-US for American English), to the root directory of the Kindle.
  • Eject and disconnect the USB device. Enter ;dsts in the search bar on the Kindle and press Enter. Then, click Update Your Kindle in the settings interface or menu to install the hotfix patch. The Kindle will then automatically restart.
  • After the restart, the Kindle will exit Demonstration Mode and perform some cleanup tasks. The entire jailbreak process is now complete.
If your Kindle restarts and has exited Demonstration Mode:
  • After the Kindle interface appears, connect the Kindle to your computer using a USB cable. Copy the hotfix patch file corresponding to your current Kindle interface language, update_hotfix_languagebreak-xx-XX.bin, to the root directory of the Kindle.
  • Click the menu items Settings ? Update Your Kindle in sequence to install the hotfix patch. The entire jailbreak process is complete after the restart.

At this point, your Kindle should be in normal mode, with all functions working correctly, and an mkk folder should exist in the root directory.

If you find that certain functions of your Kindle (such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth) are not working, you can enter ;demo in the search bar and press Enter to enter the activation demonstration mode interface. Then click the Yes button on the right. This will cause the Kindle to automatically restart, reset, and enter normal mode. Finally, reinstall the update_hotfix_languagebreak-xx-XX.bin file.

To simply verify if the jailbreak was successful, you can enter ;log runme in the search bar at the top of the Kindle interface and press Enter. If the words No user script found. appear in the top left corner, it indicates everything is fine.

If you want to keep the jailbreak effective, do not upgrade the firmware. Firmware versions exceeding 5.16.2.1.1 will break the jailbreak.

7. Installing the Hotfix Patch

After a successful jailbreak, if you wish to upgrade your Kindle's firmware to the latest version to patch the demonstration mode vulnerability, you must first install the latest version of the JailBreak Hotfix to prevent the jailbreak from being disabled after the firmware update.

However, note that installing the patch does not mean it is permanently effective, as the patch's effectiveness usually lags behind Amazon's firmware updates. That is, a new firmware update could disable the patch at any time. Therefore, to prevent the jailbreak from being disabled, it is best not to rely solely on the patch but to disable automatic Kindle updates instead.

Step 1 Connect your Kindle to your computer using a USB cable until the Kindle drive appears.

Step 2 Extract the downloaded ZIP archive JailBreak-x.xx.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zip. You will obtain a file named Update_jailbreak_hotfix_x.xx.N_install.bin.

Step 3 Copy this .bin file to the root directory of the Kindle drive, then safely eject the Kindle from your computer.

Step 4 On the Kindle, click Menu >>Settings >> Menu >> Update Your Kindle in sequence. Wait for the restart.

Step 5 After the restart completes, you can safely upgrade your Kindle to the latest firmware.

Tip: If you have already installed MRPI, you can also install the Hotfix like a plugin. That is, copy the .bin file to the mrpackages folder first, then enter the ;log mrpi command in the Kindle search bar and press Enter.

8. Installing Plugins

After a successful jailbreak, you can refer to the article "Kindle Jailbreak Plugin Resource Download and Detailed Installation Steps" to install the desired plugins. Note that if you find some plugins cannot be installed properly, it may be a compatibility issue, which requires patiently waiting for the plugin author to provide an update.

Special Note! When using the ;log command in the search bar, you might see historical records of previous commands that failed. Be careful not to click on these search history entries. You must use the Kindle's virtual keyboard to type ;log again and press Enter to run the command.
